Repurposing With A Purpose

Chalkboarding

Chalkboards are everywhere we look these days.

Even IF I were to make chalkboards & signs for the next 20 yrs, I don’t think I would be able to use all the scrap wood that seems to multiply like rabbits in our shop while we’re sleeping……

Soooooooo……. I decided to use the wood clutter we had lounging around our shop…… waiting for me to trip over it.

Cabinet doors turned chalkboards are hot items these days….. actually just about anything painted with chalkboard paint sells like

Chalkboard

hotcakes.  I took this spare cabinet door & slapped some  barn red paint on it…… although red doesn’t seem to sell as well, at times, as other colors I really like deeper shades of red.

And yes, I will usually paint the back of my projects because it gives it a finished look even though I know some of you think it’s a waste of time & material.  I always think of a customer possibly having a cool & creative new idea to use my product; however, they might not be able to do so if the entire piece isn’t finished which in my mind might make or break the sale.

Anyhoo……after painting front & back……I painted 3 coats of chalkboard paint onto the front but left some of the original white paint showing  to frame it.

I think the white frame gave it some nice extra detail.

I put a couple of coats of clear wax on the red painted area to seal it & added a burlap bow.

There you have it!  A cute fun & easy project

Bur-lamps

Thrift stores have a wealth of resources for re-purposing……….which is where this little lamp came from……….

I wish I’d taken a picture of the “before” because it was a maroon-purple-ish color on the base……….screamed 1980’s………..big hair & Bon Jovi……….

She needed a face lift & little TLC………….

I lightly sanded the base so the paint would grip better……….

painted with a chrome metallic silver paint……….

found a shade that fit – in fact I think I had that lamp shade in my stash………

added a burlap sash & flower

She looks much better & sophisticatedly vintagy (yes I sometimes make up my own words)

Do you have a small item that needs a face lift with a fresh coat of paint?

You light up my life……

as well as what I might be reading…….hehehehe

Lamps & lighting are a necessity but who says they have to be boring???

New ideas have emerged about how to get creative with lighting & lamp shades ……….. out with the old & in with the new…….. or just use the bare essentials

This was a vintage table lamp I picked up & sold last year (or maybe the year before ……. yikes……..time flies when I’m having fun!)

Materials used:

Chalk Paint (turquoise & white)

Dark Wax

Clear Wax

Burlap strips for the shade

I love how it turned out – so fun & unique – especially since we don’t see lamps like this made anymore

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Bumpkins & Purlap

As I was sitting on my couch sipping java, looking out the window watching it snow this 19-degree-but-feels-like-11-degrees kind of morning I was contemplating what to blog about……..truth is I’m just now getting into the habit of taking pictures of the process when doing projects.

However, as I became more alert (thank you Maxwell House) it occurred to me that I have a bazillion (well maybe not exactly a ba-zillion) but at least ALOT of pictures of finished projects………so I decided that finished pieces could take center stage for now…….until I gather more pics of diy processes……….or until more inspiration hits……….

So…….. I’ll start with a a really simple & fun project I did this past fall………. after our annual Halloween bash I had a plain ole’ plastic pumpkin that contained candy corn & peanuts (aka crack…….that sweet & salty is soooo tasty)…… after the sweet & salty goodness was inhaled I decided to do something crafty with the pumpkin container………..

I had some burlap laying around in my stash that I cut into strips & glued onto the pumpkin……

Next, I rolled a stem & secured it with hot glue so it wouldn’t unroll……

Then I hot glued a bird nest upside down to create a little texture around the stem & hot glued the burlap stem to the nest ………..

hot glued a strand of beads around the stem………

created a lace flower out of some lace trim I had & hot glued a vintage button to the middle of the flower……….

hot glued the flower at the base of the burlap stem………

and tadaaaaaaaaaaaa……………. a cute & easy fall project completed in a short amount of time

What everyday item do you have laying around that you can re-purpose?
